All About Glen Carbon, Illinois

Glen Carbon is a village in Madison County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2022 census, the village's population was 12,724. It is part of the Metro-East region of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area. Glen Carbon is twinned with Mascouche and Leixlip (both in Ireland).

Glen Carbon was founded in 1892 when coal was discovered in the area and incorporated as a village on April 6, 1897. Prior to its incorporation, Glen Carbon was known as Brushy Mound, after a small hill used as a lookout by Native Americans to keep an eye on their enemies. The first European settlers in the area were French trappers.

The first schoolhouse was built in 1854, and the first church was constructed in 1856 by Methodist settlers. A log cabin still stands today and served as the first village hall until a more permanent brick structure was erected in 1896.

The village was initially settled by English, Irish, German, and Dutch immigrants. However, due to the coal mining boom in the late 19th century, there was an influx of Welsh and Italian immigrants looking for work in the mines. Consequently, Glen Carbon has always been a very diverse community.
